Learn About The New Innovative Retractable Awning – The Gennius by Durasol Awnings

Born of Italian design and innovation, the Gennius, by Durasol Awnings is a new innovation in the old world of awnings and canopies. Why choose between a retractable awning or stationary awning when this awning combines the flexibility of a retractable awning with the comfort and stability of a stationary roof; while at the same time adding the beauty and elegance of a pergola.

Designed to improve and expand your outdoor living or dining space, this waterproof retractable fabric structure combines the beauty of a pergola with the flexibility of a retractable awning. The GENNIUS is available with integrated rain management technology, and is specifically designed to withstand inclement weather; boasting certified wind resistances up to Beaufort Class 10 (55-63 mph “storm, tempest”) or higher, depending on size and model.

Models are available in traditional wooden pergola designs, which are distinguished by their attention to detail; as well as contemporary, corrosion resistant aluminum structures. Both types are capable of being self-supporting with integrated posts, or can be retrofitted to your existing structure or framework. The Gennius is also capable of being its own freestanding retractable roof system.

With its range of designs, the applications for this awning are almost innumerous. From Commercial to Residential to Industrial applications, the Gennius with its waterproof retractable fabric roof is designed for outdoor spaces that need the ability to create a cool, dry space in an instant. The Gennius offers a more substantial framework than a retractable awning , so it will withstand harsher conditions. Since the fabric roof is retractable, venues can generate more revenue versus traditional stationary canopies; which rely on a seasonal put-up and take-down of the fabric. The Gennius is always ready to deploy, offering on-demand protection with the touch of a button… greatly extending the seasonal use of a space. Best of all, it offers most of the benefits of a renovation, but without the hefty costs.

How does it work?

The Gennius is a waterproof retractable fabric roof system, designed to protect against sun, but engineered with the capability to withstand the wind and rain. The Gennius operates via a lightweight, durable aluminum structure with a pleated retracting fabric. This dimensionally stable, flame-retardant woven and coated fabric is available in two levels of opacity. The 100% UV blackout colors are matte finished, and decorated with a herringbone embossment for a warmer look and feel. The blackout fabric is designed to block unsightly shadows of environmental pollution from showing through the fabric. The 90% UV allows the perfect amount of ambient light to pass through the fabric while keeping patrons underneath shielded from the sun and rain.

The fabric operates by riding underneath attached guide rails parallel to the direction of travel. A series of aluminum extrusions support and traverse the underside of the fabric approximately every two feet along the entire width of the awning, which gives it its strength and rigidity. A set of extruded PVC/Polyurethane gaskets installed on the underside of the guide rails block rainwater from spilling over the edges of the awning, while the pitched fabric runs water downhill to the integrated gutter system (most models). See it in action below!

A set of machine-grade indexed steel belts within each of the guide rails are timed precisely to each other. These belts are operated by a drive shaft and roller tube assembly attached to either a gear (small awnings only) or a ~2 amp electric motor. The belts are attached to the traverse profiles and fabric through a series of rolling trolleys, which bring s the fabric in and out in a linear fashion. As the fabric nears full projection, it tightens against the extruded gaskets, which forms the rain tight seal overhead.

A special 7-layer sound-deadening hood protects the awning fabric in its retracted position. This low profile protective cover is made from layers of aluminum and low density polyethylene with a protective Kinar 500 paint finish.

The result is a heavy duty, beautifully engineered European-Style retractable awning backed by a limited lifetime warranty. For more information, please visit www.pergola-awning.com .
